This will provide more context on activities you will see through out the curriculum. This is an accumulation of all elemts you will encounter regadless of lesson type.
Elements
Essential Points of the Lesson
Lesson Type: Included in all lesson types.
Card Type: Green Card for teacher support.
Purpose: This element is not part of the lesson sequence. It provides teachers with detailed background information on the concepts being taught, explaining the how and why behind the lesson.
Classmates Reflections
Lesson Type: Included in all lesson types.
Excluded from the first lesson in the unit.
Card Type: White Card for presentation.
Purpose: The teacher presents the students' reflections from the previous lesson to help trigger their memories of what they learned. This prepares them mentally for the upcoming math lesson and reminds them of their existing knowledge base.
"Do You Remember?" Questionnaire
Lesson Type: Included in all lesson types.
Card Type: White Card for presentation.
Purpose: This questionnaire serves as a refresher to help students recall previous knowledge essential for understanding upcoming concepts. It doesn’t aim for correct answers but provides teachers insight into their students' knowledge base and offers a topic for class discussion.
Today's Investigation
Lesson Type: Included in Investigate, Learn, and Extend lesson types
Card Type: White Card for presentation.
Purpose: This element contains the main math problem for the lesson and gives students a chance to start thinking about how they might solve it.
Mathematical Challenge
Lesson Type: Included in Investgate and Extend lesson types.
Card Type: White Card for presentation.
Purpose: This element poses a math question that encourages students to approach "Today's Investigation" problem from a different perspective or helps them get started on an unfamiliar problem.
My Idea
Lesson Type: Included in Investigate and Extend lesson types.
Card Type: Blue Card for student work.
Purpose: Students have the opportunity to solve the problem in "Today's Investigation" and reflect on the "Mathematical Challenge" question. They can record their thoughts—whether correct, incorrect, or uncertain—on the My Idea Card. This process is essential for giving students the space to think independently and analyze both what they understand and what they have yet to grasp. The lesson types with this Card are intended to challenge students on a math concept they have yet to learn to see if they can use past knoweldge to understand it. It is their first approach to the new concept.
My Math Note (MMN)
Lesson Type: Included in all lesson types.
Card Type: Blue Card for student work.
Purpose: This tool acts as a student notebook where they can record all essential elements of the lesson.
Collective Thinking Board (CTB)
Lesson Type: Included in all lesson types.
Card Type: White Card for presentation.
Purpose: This tool acts as the teacher's board work. It contains essental elements of the lesson as well as student work to aid the class in discusson.
Collective Thinking Board (CTB) Sample
Lesson Type: Included in Investigate and Extend lesson types.
Card Type: White Card to match the CTB that would be presented, but it is a tool for teachers and not included in the lesson sequence.
Purpose: This teacher tool is meant to inspire teachers in creating engaging boardwork for their lessons that aid students in discussion. The CTB sample is set up will all elements filled in to show teachers what a full CTB should look like.
New Idea
Lesson Type: Included in Investigate, Learn, and Extend lesson types.
Card Type: White Card for presentation.
Purpose: This element confirms and solidifies the new math concept in the lesson. This concept is what we hope students would arrive at when working on their "My Idea" Card.
Apply What You Learned
Lesson Type: Included in Investigate, Learn, Apply, and Extend lesson types.
Card Type: White Card for presentation and Blue Card for student work.
Purpose: This element presents students with a math problem similar to previous ones related to the concept.
In Investigate and Extend lessons, students use the "Apply What You Learned" Card to tackle a similar problem to the one on their "My Idea" Card but with newly learned concepts for better understanding.
In Learn lessons, the "Apply What You Learned" Card extends the math learned in the previous lesson.
In Apply lessons, this Card consolidates all previous lessons related to the math concept and extends their knowledge.
Anticipated Responses
Lesson Type: Included in all lesson types.
Card Type: Green for teacher support.
Purpose: These tools provide teachers with references for common student responses to the problems in the lesson, both correct and incorrect.
Essential Questions
Lesson Type: Included in Investigate and Extend lesson types.
Card Type: Green for teacher support.
Purpose: This tool allows teachers to add questions related to the math concept to the Collective Thinking Board for students to consider during discussions.
Summary
Lesson Type: Included in Investigate, Learn, Apply, and Extend lesson types.
Card Type: White Card for presentation.
Purpose: This provides a lesson summary for students about what concepts were covered in the lesson.
Check Your Understanding
Lesson Type: Included in Investigate, Learn, Apply, and Extend lesson types.
Card Type: Blue Card for student work.
Purpose: This element is the last of student work in a lesson. It is a new problem for them to work on to ensure they understand what was taught in the lesson. It acts like an Exit Ticket.
Exercise
Lesson Type: Included in the Master lesson type.
Card Type: Blue Card for student work.
Purpose: This element is the bluk of the Master lesson type. Many Exercise Cards are presented in the Master lesson to give students adequate practice with the concepts they have learned over the preceeding lessons.
Answer Key
Lesson Type: Included in all lesson types.
Card Type: Green Card for teacher support.
Purpose: This tool provides teachers the correct answer to "Check Your Understanding" and "Exercise" activities.
Fluency Check
Lesson Type: Included in Master lesson type.
Card Type: White Card for presentation it is a Test Card.
Purpose: This tool includes grade-level arithmetic exercises designed to enhance students' fluency in number manipulation.
My Reflection
Lesson Type: Included in Investigate, Learn, Apply, and Extend lesson types.
Card Type: Blue Card for student work.
Purpose: This element is included in the My Math Note and serves as the final step in a lesson. It provides students with an opportunity to write down their personal learnings, takeaways, and perspectives from the lesson.
